Visualize with QuickSight using Athena

In this lab we will build an Amazon QuickSight Dashboard.

Set up QuickSight

Note: Login as an IAM user that has permissions to setup QuickSight.
  1. From the AWS services console, navigate to QuickSight (https://quicksight.aws.amazon.com/sn/start).
  2. If AWS Account is not signed up for QuickSight, you will be prompted to sign up.
  3. Select Enterprise edition and click Continue.
  4. On next screen, ensure region is set to US East (N. Virginia).
  5. Create QuickSight account name. Example, last name with random 3 digit code.
  6. Enter email address for Notification. Keep all other defaults.
  7. Check Amazon S3. That should pop up a window to select S3 buckets.
  8. Select All in S3 Buckets Linked to QuickSight Account.
  9. Verify your selections with below screen print. It is important that in prior step you select “athena-workshop-xxxxxx” as S3 bucket that you can access across AWS.
  10. Click Finish and it should create QuickSight Account.
  11. Go to Amazon QuickSight and it should load few samples. You can close new features announcements window.
  12. We will go ahead and create dashboard using Athena table created earlier.
  13. Click New Analysis and then New dataset.
  14. In Datasets, Choose Athena. For Data source name, type “athenaimmersion” and click Create Data Source.
  15. On Next screen, select “default“ database and select “amazon_reviews_by_marketplace” table.
  16. To finish data set creation, choose the option “Directly query your data” and click Visualize.
  17. You should see QuickSight editor to create dashboards.

Create QuickSight Charts


In this section we will take you through some of the different chart types.
  1. From Fields List, drag product_category on AutoGraph. QuickSight auto selects Horizontal bar chart. You should see count of records by Product Category.
  2. Go ahead and experiment with other Visual Types and filters in QuickSight.
